As Haberman gardeners pick bumper crops of tomatoes and cucumbers (and prepare for an onslaught of fall squash), stories of employer gardens across the nation are coming in by the bushel. Faced with great abundance on all fronts, we whipped up a batch of Tomato Cucumber Salad for nourishment and compiled a summary of workplace gardens from coast-to-coast and many points in between.

The garden’s 65 raised beds include a variety of vegetables, herbs and flowers harvested and taken home by team members, who each pay a $25 refundable deposit and attend a sustainable gardening course before digging in.
Six common Chesapeake plots boast shared crops ranging from berries to cut flowers; a seventh plot is used for competitions, such at the Largest Watermelon Contest. I really feel like the garden has brought all of us closer together.”
A giving garden for local food pantries unites employees of Baxter International, a health care company in Deerfield, Ill. Designed to achieve the company’s goals to be green, the 50-by-50-foot plot of peas, onions, peppers, corn and tomatoes is tended over lunch, after work and even during time each week specifically endorsed by company officials for volunteerism.
The United State Department of Agriculture (USDA) has challenged its employees to grow gardens at its facilities worldwide or help communities create gardens through “People’s Gardens.” Answering the call are employees for the Farm Service Agency in Urbandale, Iowa, and Service Center in West Liberty, Ky., who grow vegetables for local food shelves and senior citizens, respectively.
The USDA plots are among 400 in the nation that vary in size and type, but they all share a purpose – to help the community they’re within and promote greater environmental awareness.

Blue Cross Blue Shield, Hennepin County Medical Center, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy, Digi International, Quantum Controls and Common Roots have joined us in relishing an unusually wet summer – and cursing a big weed crop.
